Cary History

Cary Quad CrestCary Hall opened in 1928. Franklin Masten Cary was born in Detroit, Michigan, May 27, 1858, a son of Captain Charles H. and Eliza Cary, and on November 23, 1892, he married Miss Jessie Levering. They had one son, Franklin Levering Cary who died in 1912 at the age of 19.

After his retirement, Mr. Cary devoted increasing time and thought to philanthropies. He purchased 41 acres of land, east of Lafayette, and presented it to the local Boy Scouts organization as a campsite, in memory of his son. He was a financial contributor to the first men's residence hall at Purdue. The hall was named in honor of his son. As the University grew, so did the need for housing. Cary now has five separate buildings and is referred to as Cary Quadrangle.

Residential Life

The mission of the Cary Quadrangle staff is to foster an environment conducive to academic success, safety, and personal growth by being actively involved in our residents' lives. This will be reached by providing residents with outside-the-classroom educational opportunities, supporting the community respect initiative of University Residences, and implementing novel, interactive and diverse programs. A wide variety of activities and strong traditions are offered at Cary, including Cary Fest, a week of events before the Springtime Grand Prix race.

Residence Amenities

Each unit of Cary Quadrangle offers a variety of common areas. Each unit has study lounges, recreational lounges, pool tables, table tennis, Big Screen TV Viewing areas, laundry and vending areas. Cary has a centrally located computer room with a dozen stations. Cary Quadrangle also boasts a unique enclosed courtyard area that is great for games, Frisbee, tossing a ball, having a Bar-B-Q, or just laying in the sun. It's also great for building a snowman in the winter. Cary offers a cinema series during which movies are shown on a three-story screen in the courtyard (weather permitting).
